A revolution has emerged in inner tubes with the introduction of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a synthetic material that allows for the production of tubes with excellent air tightness, very low weight, and an incredibly compact volume compared to traditional butyl tubes.
All these properties facilitate better rolling resistance, very similar to what we experience when riding with tubeless tires. Its elasticity also provides greater puncture resistance, although repairs require specific patches.
Although the price of TPU tubes is higher than conventional latex or butyl tubes, the significant advantages they offer in terms of rolling resistance and lightness more than compensate for the cost, especially considering the longer lifespan of TPU tubes.
Finally, it’s worth noting the reduced space they occupy when folded, making them a perfect option to carry along with our roadside repair kit, even for those who use tubeless tires.
